Military NATO Watch Strap
This classic NATO watch strap is manufactured from premium military-grade woven nylon webbing, a fast-drying, high-performance material renowned for its exceptional strength, comfort and durability. Developed for demanding military use, this tightly woven nylon is highly resistant to abrasion, moisture and everyday wear, making it ideally suited to professional and outdoor applications.
Unlike conventional two-piece straps, the NATO design secures the watch at two separate attachment points. Even if one spring bar fails, the watch remains attached to the strap, dramatically reducing the risk of accidental loss. This unique design has made the NATO strap the preferred choice of military personnel for more than half a century.
History and Evolution
The NATO strap originated over 50 years ago with a single grey military issue strap supplied to the British Armed Forces. As demand increased, additional colours were introduced, including RAF Blue, Black, Navy Blue, Olive Green and the now-famous "James Bond" pattern.
Today our range has expanded to include almost every conceivable variation, including regimental colours, Search and Rescue (SAR) orange, national colours, police and emergency service combinations, as well as specialist camouflage patterns designed for a variety of operational environments.
Although often referred to simply as "NATO straps", many of these variants were developed specifically for military units outside the United Kingdom and continue to be widely used by serving military personnel around the world.
One of the World's Largest Military Strap Ranges
We currently manufacture nearly 200 different NATO strap variants, available in widths from 18mm to 24mm.
Our range includes:
- Military issue colours
- Regimental patterns
- National flag colours
- Search and Rescue variants
- Police and emergency service straps
- Camouflage designs
- Custom regimental straps
These straps are supplied to both retail and wholesale customers, with many produced under military and government procurement contracts.
Military Specifications
The original NATO strap specification was established by the UK Ministry of Defence under Defence Standard 66-47 Issue 2, published on 30 March 2001.
Earlier specifications included:
- Defence Standard 66-47 Issue 1 (13 November 1992)
- Defence Standard 66-15 Part 1 Issue 1 (30 November 1973)
- Defence Standard 66-15 Part 2 Issue 1 (31 January 1974)
Although minor revisions have been introduced over the years, the fundamental design has remained remarkably unchanged. Some military procurement contracts specify stitched reinforcement around the buckle and keepers, while others continue to require heat-sealed construction. Strap lengths may also vary slightly depending on the contract specification.
Most of the NATO straps we manufacture closely follow the original Ministry of Defence specifications.
Built for Professional Use
For many years we have supplied NATO straps to organisations operating in some of the world's harshest environments, including:
- Armed forces
- Police services
- Search and Rescue teams
- Emergency services
- Oil and gas companies
- Marine exploration and salvage organisations
- Expedition teams
- Contractors working in tropical, arctic and desert environments
The tightly woven nylon webbing is quick-drying, highly resistant to rot and mildew, easy to clean and exceptionally durable. Unlike leather, it is unaffected by prolonged exposure to water, while offering greater flexibility and longevity than many rubber or silicone alternatives.
Compatibility
Our NATO straps are compatible with virtually any watch fitted with conventional spring bars.
They are widely used with military watches manufactured by companies including:
- Marathon
- MWC
- Citizen
- Pulsar
- Hamilton
- Benrus
- Stocker & Yale
- Cabot Watch Company (CWC)
They are equally suitable for civilian watches from brands such as Seiko, Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Breitling and many others.
Why Choose a NATO Strap?
The NATO strap remains one of the most practical watch straps ever developed. Its secure one-piece construction, outstanding durability, low weight and exceptional comfort have made it the preferred choice of military personnel, emergency services, professional divers, explorers and watch enthusiasts worldwide.
Whether used in operational environments or for everyday wear, a genuine military-style NATO strap offers an unmatched combination of security, reliability and comfort.
